The holy grail for physicists is the Grand Unified Theory. It should explain everything from the largest scale (explained by the theory of relativity) to the smallest scale (covered by quantum mechanics). It should provide a single coherent explanation for everything about the physical properties of matter, spacetime, and even gravity. It would unify all of physics in a single theoretical framework.
My Grand Unified Theory focuses on bigger goals… how to bend the universe to your will. (…evil grin)
Label the physical universe as level one. It’s the matter and energy that build everything.
Level One: The Physical Universe
The matter and energy that build everything. This is everything we can sense or have ever sensed. Physical stuff. Everything is composed of energy, even the matter around us. Matter is made up of enormous amounts of energy.
Consider this: the energy in a milligram of a fingernail clipping has energy equivalent to 21.5 tons of TNT. Energy fields interact. So, I’m not being lazy when I take a nap… I’m trying to keep from exploding.
Level Two: Navigating the Cosmic Dance Floor
Imagine the universe as a dance hall, where each step and move is a choice that leads us through the melody of existence. In this cosmic choreography, being in the right place at the right moment is like finding the perfect rhythm in a dance.
Choose your steps wisely and position yourself well. It’s not just about grabbing opportunities. Your starting place on the dance floor sets the stage for your next move.
Where you start matters.
Move to better starting positions.
Level Three: Mastering the Dance
Your skills are the steps you’ve mastered and the rhythms you’ve learned. Each new skill is like a new dance move, enhancing your grace and impact. The more you practice, the more fluid your movements become, turning each interaction into an opportunity. Your knowledge is the music that guides you; keep learning new tunes to enrich your dance.
Skills are the steps you’ve mastered.
Knowledge is the music that guides you.
What you know matters. Keep learning.
Level Four: The Role of Random Chance (Luck)
Luck is the way the universe has of making complex systems act unpredictably. The entire universe is a “complex system.” Small changes in any part of a complex system can result in extremely large changes elsewhere (this is called the “butterfly effect”). Our reactions to these unpredictable events shape our path.
How you react to random chance matters. React wisely.
Level Five: Interconnected Influence
Our physical bodies, thoughts, emotions, and movements are all patterns of energy. Energy patterns interact. Each “thing” has some influence on everything around it. The effects may be tiny, such as the effect your body’s gravity has on the path a ball on the pool table takes, but they accumulate.
Small changes, like a single person catching a new virus (COVID-19 anyone?), can radically change the world. We live within an interconnected network where chaos sometimes hits. Most of the time, things are stable, until they aren’t.
We are patterns of energy, influencing and interacting with the world around us.
Even the smallest actions can have profound effects on the larger system.
We live in a universe where positioning, skill, and chance will all combine to have effects. The position we occupy depends on the position we were in the moment before. The skill we bring to bear depends on the investment we make to learn.
Level Six: You have a limited amount of control in the universe, but you can influence much more. The Marine Corps taught me this lesson, Gung Ho! It translates as “Working Together”. It’s the Marine motto and it’s the way to evolve from an individual to a superorganism.
The pack is stronger than the wolf. Start with a single wolf: dangerous and a scary adversary. Scale up to a coordinated wolf pack: Far more dangerous and effective.
Alone, we survive. Together we thrive! Start with a single human: a tool-making predator, adapted to flourish in every climate on the planet; also, a dangerous and scary adversary. Scale up to a village, which is far more effective than the wolf pack. At this scale, we tamed the wolf and made it our ally.
Each level of scale results in more effectiveness. Scale up to a city-state, a nation, or a global network. At this level, we cure diseases, communicate around the world in an instant, explore the solar system, and affect every living thing on the planet.
Together, we are most effective.
Level 6 suggests something. You can’t control the world. Random chance makes controlling it impossible. In this hyper-networked world where everyone can reach and affect everyone, you can influence it.
Your influence bends the universe. Make sure it’s bending where it should.
That’s My Perspective…
